· Captain Westaway was six foot, eight inches tall and weight 380 lbs at times. In addition to being so big and strong he was exceptionally smart, he went to sea when he was fourteen and when he was eighteen took the test for masters papers in all five categories of ships at the time. Typically a good man was at sea for twenty before he took the test in one area, Captain Westaway passed all five tests which was completely unheard of at the time.
· Captain Westaway, commanded many merchant and patrol ships, both American and Canadian during the First World War, and it is said his size required modifications to the wheel house of ships so he could enter. After a colorful career at sea retired to Halifax and Sydney, Cape Breton.
· (Joseph) Vaughan Westaway, grandson of Joseph Bennett Westaway, Captain Jim Westaway's brother, adds the following stories:
Jack Westaway, son of William and Mary (Sencabaugh) Westaway told Vaughan that Jim Westaway pick up a cargo and crew of ex-slaves in Charleston S.C., signing the crew on for a round trip. When they got to Cape Town, South Africa, the crew wanted their money and to be let ashore. As Jim needed them for the return trip, he told them they would have neither. A big man came at Jim with a knife which Jim reached up and grabbed by the blade, breaking the blade with his bare hand. However, he cut his little finger of his left hand so badly that it was crooked the rest of his life.
Josephine Westaway, daughter of Joseph Bennett Westaway, told the following to Dick Cavanaugh's children: A disgruntle seaman came up behind Jim at night and stabbed him in the back. Jim turned around, grabbed the man, picked him up over his head, broke his back over the rail of their ship, and threw him into the sea. Jim then pulled the knife out of his back and went about his business.
· Also said to have acted in silent films.
